Madison and Rankin Counties’ District Attorney Michael Guest announced today that Michael Truss received a 30-year sentence for the statutory rape of an 11 year old girl. Ten years of his sentence will be suspended and he will have to register as a sex offender upon his release.

In 2001, the 11 year old victim was living with her aunt and during that time she was raped by Michael Truss, who also resided at the home with the victim. This rape resulted in the victim becoming pregnant with a child by Truss. In 2010, the case surfaced again when the victim’s family went to law enforcement because they were concerned that Truss was sexually abusing another individual. Law enforcement obtained a DNA profile of the child and also obtained a search warrant for the DNA of Michael Truss. The DNA test determined that the victim gave birth to the baby in 2002 and was fathered by Truss.

Guest stated, “Truss was able to avoid prosecution for nearly ten years before the victim and her family’s pleas were finally heard. I am proud that this child molester has finally been brought to justice. Truss will be almost 70 years old before he is released from jail. The sentence he received requires that he spend the next twenty years in prison with the possibility of parole or early release.”

Guest added, “This case is disturbing on many levels. Our children should be safe in their homes without the threat of being sexually assaulted from individuals like Truss. It is additionally disturbing that this young girl’s assailant remained free for 10 years before being brought to justice. I am thankful that the current personnel at the Canton Police Department opened an investigation into this matter, and worked diligently to bring Truss to justice once they learned of his crime. We can only hope and pray that no other individual’s were sexually assaulted by Truss before he could be charged and arrested for crimes.”
