Madison and Rankin Counties’ District Attorney Michael Guest announced today that following a two day trial, Robert Floyd McGuire was found guilty for the murder of his longtime girlfriend, Lynda Tate. Following the verdict of guilty by the jury he was sentenced to serve a term of life in prison.

On December 3, 2011, the Brandon Police Department responded to a call from a neighbor of the victim. The called stated that McGuire had asked the neighbor to call for help because he had just shot his girlfriend. Upon arriving, law enforcement found McGuire with blood on his face, hands, shirt, pants and socks sitting on the floor next to a chair where the victim lay dead.

The body of the victim, Lynda Tate, was located slumped over in a chair in the living room. She was pronounced dead at the scene after suffering a single gunshot wound to the head. McGuire was arrested on the scene and told the police officers that he had killed the victim but claimed that the shooting was an accident.

During their assessment of the house, law enforcement found the gun close to the victim’s body, several shell casings and bullet fragments. They also noticed beer cans spread throughout the living room, which explained why McGuire appeared intoxicated to officers.

The firearm recovered at the crime scene was submitted to the State Crime Laboratory and ballistic test confirmed that the gun recovered by law enforcement had fired the projectile that killed the victim.

Guest stated, “This is a senseless crime where the victim’s life was taken by someone she loved. This death has shattered the lives of the victim’s family. I can only hope that they find some comfort knowing that the person who has taken her life has now been sent to prison for the rest of his life.”

Guest concluded, “This man murdered his longtime girlfriend and then tried to get away with his crime by claiming it was an accident. I cannot thank the Brandon Police Department and State Crime Laboratory enough for their diligent work to prove that the death of Lynda Tate was nothing short of murder.”

District Attorney Michael Guest was sworn into office in January 2008 and represents the Twentieth Judicial District, Madison and Rankin Counties.
