Teenage Killer Receives 20-Year Sentence for Killing Another Teenager

Madison and Rankin Counties’ District Attorney Michael Guest announced today that Tevin Green received a 20-year sentence for manslaughter, through a plea agreement, for killing Arthravius Harris on February 14, 2008.

On that date, the Madison County Sheriff’s Department responded to a call at Anderson’s Lodge due to a disturbance inside of the facility.  While deputies were coordinating crowd control they heard several gunshots not far from their location.  They immediately responded to the area where they heard the shots to find a 14-year old boy, with a gunshot wound to the head, lying on the ground.

Law enforcement officials also found several spent shell casing from a .25 caliber pistol.

Deputies began interviewing witnesses and identified Green, age 16, as the shooter.  Green was arrested later that night and transported to the Madison County Detention Center.  During Green’s interview with law enforcement, he confessed to firing at the victim, but claimed he was acting in self defense.

Guest stated, “We can call this incident whatever legal term we want, but this is a terrible tragedy.  The end result is a 14 year old child is now dead and another teenager is going to prison for twenty years.”

Guest concluded, “As a community built on laws, we cannot allow our children to endanger the lives of others.  A case involving children shooting other children is a serious threat to everyone.  We cannot back away from sending strong messages to criminals and would be criminals, that regardless of their age, they will pay severe consequences for their crimes.”

District Attorney Michael Guest was sworn into office in January 2008 and represents the Twentieth Judicial District, Madison and Rankin Counties.  For more information about the District Attorney’s office, please visit www.daguest.com.
